Burmese Buddha in gilded bronze on a lotus-shaped base – Ava - Lot 43
Burmese Buddha in gilded bronze on a lotus-shaped base – Ava/Toungoo period, 17th–18th century
A seated Buddha figure in the bhūmisparśa mudrā, depicted in meditation on a tiered lotus-shaped pedestal. This sculpture was cast in bronze using the traditional sand-casting technique and retains significant traces of its original gilding. The long earlobes, the serene face with half-closed eyes, the simple monastic robe, and the characteristic ushnisha are all characteristic of the Burmese sculptural tradition of the 17th and 18th centuries. The reverse side features finely engraved folds in the robe. The base is heavily affected by corrosion, with significant deposits of copper oxidation and mineral concretions resulting from prolonged exposure to a humid environment. The cavity visible beneath the base corresponds to the typical structure of Burmese religious bronzes cast using the sand-casting method. Despite this deterioration, the sculpture retains a striking aesthetic presence, enhanced by the contrast between the remnants of gilding and the antique patina.
