Snuffbox made from a porcelain shell (Cypraea tigris) with a - Lot 13
Snuffbox made from a porcelain shell (Cypraea tigris) with a silver mount – 19th century An elegant snuff box crafted from a Cypraea tigris shell, whose naturally mottled surface is highlighted by a silver mount that follows the contours of the shell. The hinged mechanism allows the underside—which serves as a lid—to open, revealing a compartment designed to hold snuff or small precious objects. This type of object, straddling the line between natural curiosities and goldsmithing, was particularly prized in the 19th century in collectors’ cabinets and natural history collections. The custom-made setting highlights the shell’s organic lines while ensuring its functionality. In good overall condition with wear and patina consistent with its age. Details: Length: 9 cm – Width: 6 cm – Height: 5 cm – Weight: 125 g.
