Antonin Mercié (1845–1916) – "Quand Même" – Large bronze, cast by F. Barbedienne, Paris
A large bronze sculpture with a brown patina depicting *Quand Même*, an iconic work by the French sculptor Antonin Mercié. This allegorical composition, inspired by the events of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871, depicts a young Alsatian woman brandishing a rifle and supporting a wounded soldier. A symbol of courage, resistance, and devotion to the homeland, this figure has become one of the most striking images of French patriotism from the late 19th century.
The quality of the modeling, the meticulous rendering of the drapery, the facial expressions, and the dynamic composition attest to the talent of Mercié, a major figure in French academic sculpture. The scene exudes a strong dramatic intensity, reinforced by the movement of the flag and the determined stance of the young woman dominating the composition.
This piece bears the signature A. Mercié as well as the prestigious stamp “F. Barbedienne Fondeur Paris.” The Barbedienne foundry, founded by Ferdinand Barbedienne, was one of the most important French art foundries of the 19th century and produced bronze editions of works by the greatest sculptors of its time. Barbedienne castings are renowned for the excellence of their chiseling, the quality of their patina, and their historical significance in the art market.
Rare in this monumental format, this sculpture is a remarkable testament to late 19th-century French sculpture and a representative example of the collaboration between Antonin Mercié and the Barbedienne foundry.
