Pair of bronze sculptures, “The Lizard Charmer” and “The Fis - Lot 226
Pair of bronze sculptures, “The Lizard Charmer” and “The Fisherman,” by Adolphe-Jean Lavergne A pair of bronze sculptures with a brown patina depicting two young boys in genre scenes characteristic of Adolphe-Jean Lavergne’s work. The Lizard Charmer depicts a child playing the flute while a lizard rests on the instrument; the Fisherman depicts a young boy holding his fishing line. Both figures rest on rectangular bases bearing their original cartouches titled “The Lizard Charmer” and “The Fisherman,” with the inscription “Par Lavergne.” The set illustrates the late 19th-century French sculptural tradition’s preference for scenes of daily life and childhood, rendered with naturalistic modeling and particular attention to posture, facial expressions, and sartorial details. Adolphe-Jean Lavergne was a French sculptor active in Paris during the second half of the 19th century. A student of François Jouffroy, he exhibited at the Paris Salon and primarily created figures, busts, and genre scenes. The models Lizard Charmer and Fisherman are among his best-known compositions and were produced in various sizes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Details: Height: 46 cm each – Weight: 12.2 kg total – Bronze with brown patina – Original cartels titled “Lizard Charmer” and “Fisherman” – Inscription “Par Lavergne” on the bases – Sold as a pair.
