“The Grasshopper” by Jean Cambos, porcelain biscuit, late 19th century A large sculpture in white porcelain biscuit depicting a young woman seated on a tree stump, in a pensive and melancholic pose. The work is inspired by Jean de La Fontaine’s famous fable “The Grasshopper and the Ant,” the opening lines of which are inscribed on a cartouche integrated into the base: “The grasshopper, having sung all summer long, found himself in dire straits when the cold wind blew.” The figure is dressed in a light tunic animated by rich pleating, while her expression and posture convey the moment of distress evoked in the fable. The model bears the signature J. Cambos. Jean Cambos (1847–1917) was a French sculptor active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for his allegorical subjects, his female figures, and his compositions inspired by literature and mythology. His works were widely distributed in the form of bronzes, regules, and bisque porcelain pieces intended for interior decoration. Details: Height: 69 cm – Weight: 11 kg – White porcelain biscuit – Signed J. Cambos on the pedestal – Title and quote from La Fontaine’s fable cast on the base – Late 19th century.
