English travel clock by C. F. Hancock, London, circa 1849–18 - Lot 117
English travel clock by C. F. Hancock, London, circa 1849–1850
A rare rectangular travel clock in finely chased gilt bronze, resting on a retractable stand. The dial, featuring Roman numerals, is engraved with foliage and floral motifs of great finesse, protected by a beveled glass pane. The case is richly decorated with neoclassical engravings on all sides. This inscription attests that the prestigious London firm C. F. Hancock, successor to Storr Mortimer, held an official commission from Queen Adelaide of the United Kingdom as well as from the Russian Imperial Court during the reign of Tsar Nicholas I. The combination of this title and the Bruton Street address allows us to date the manufacture to around 1849–1850. A high-quality timepiece, representative of mid-19th-century English luxury craftsmanship.
Details: Height: 14 cm – Width: 11 cm – Weight: 1.050 kg.
