Four-column portico clock in mercury-gilded bronze, Empire p - Lot 110
Four-column portico clock in mercury-gilded bronze, Empire period, early 19th century
An elegant French portico clock in finely chiseled and mercury-gilded bronze, crafted during the Empire period in the early 19th century. The design draws direct inspiration from classical antiquity, featuring four columns with Corinthian capitals supporting an entablature adorned with floral garlands, rosettes, and friezes in a neoclassical style. The circular dial with Roman numerals is suspended between the columns and accompanied by its original openwork pendulum, lending the whole a remarkable architectural lightness.
The wire-driven movement, visible on the back, attests to the quality of French clockmaking of this period. The composition, with its great monumental simplicity, perfectly reflects the aesthetics of the First Empire, characterized by its taste for references to Greco-Roman architecture and its harmonious proportions. The mercury gilding retains a beautiful satin finish that highlights the finesse of the engraving and decorative elements.
Portico clocks of this type are among the most prized models of early 19th-century French clockmaking due to their architectural elegance and their seamless integration into Empire and Restoration-style interiors.
