Intembo / Woven Agatana - Rwanda - first half 20th century
A cylindrical case woven from plant fibers, used to store and transport long ceremonial straws for drinking banana or sorghum beer during Rwandan community ceremonies. The dark brown geometric decoration on a natural background features a regular spiral pattern typical of Tutsi production in the first half of the 20th century. The concentric circular base and reinforced upper rim bear witness to fine, masterful basketwork. Old patina and traces of use.
