Painted Tutsi dance shield - Rwanda - first half of the 20th century Carved wooden Tutsi ceremonial shield of elongated, domed shape, featuring polychrome geometric decoration in symmetrical black, white and red-brown registers. The central handle, carved on the reverse, was used to grip the shield during ritual dances and parades associated with court ceremonies and war demonstrations. The surface shows a beautiful patina and traces of age consistent with the object's ritual use.
