Glass bead-covered bottle with zigzag pattern - Tutsi, Rwanda - mid 20th century Decorative glass bottle entirely covered with small red and white glass beads arranged in a continuous zigzag pattern. The beads are precisely applied around a commercial glass bottle, integrating the cylindrical neck and enlarged shoulder into the geometric decoration. This type of object was made in Rwanda as a prestige object and bears witness to the development of beadwork within Tutsi culture in the mid-twentieth century, under the influence of imported trade materials. The graphic alternation of red and white gives the piece a strong visual rhythm.
