Tutsi agaseke on pedestal with geometric decoration - Rwanda - mid 20th century
Tutsi agaseke woven from plant fibers, resting on a small circular pedestal and accompanied by its conical lid with tapered top. The black and light-brown decoration is composed of triangular and diamond-shaped geometric motifs arranged vertically on the body and lid. This type of prestige basket, made with a particularly tight and regular weaving technique, was used in Rwandan culture to preserve precious foodstuffs, as well as for ceremonial and diplomatic exchanges. The slenderness of the lid and the presence of the pedestal give this example a silhouette characteristic of Tutsi production in the mid-twentieth century.
