Geometrically decorated Tutsi agaseke - Rwanda - first half 20th century
Braided Tutsi agaseke in plant fiber with black and natural graphic decoration, made according to the basketry traditions of the Great Lakes region. The slightly flared cylindrical body is accompanied by its original tapered conical lid. The large triangular geometric motifs arranged in horizontal bands create a rhythmic decoration characteristic of the prestige Rwandan baskets of the first half of the 20th century. Finely woven, this example testifies to the skill of Tutsi craftsmen and the symbolic importance of agaseke in Rwandan culture, where these baskets were used for conservation, ceremonial exchanges and prestige gifts.
