Tutsi archer's bracelet in wood with copper inlays - Rwanda - Lot 40
Tutsi archer's bracelet in wood with copper inlays - Rwanda / Burundi - early 20th century
A rare Tutsi archer's bracelet carved from a single block of dense wood, with an open circular shape and lateral slot for wearing on the forearm. The surface has a deep antique patina and a geometric pattern of perforated lines, radiating motifs and copper inlays secured by small rivets. Used as an armguard for archery, this type of object was also a prestigious badge in the pastoral societies of the Great Lakes. The sobriety of form and sculptural power are reminiscent of the aesthetics of modern art. Presented on a custom-made metal base.
