Tutsi agaseke on pedestal in woven plant fibers - Rwanda - first half 20th century
Agaseke-type Tutsi basket made of finely woven plant fibers, resting on a high, flared pedestal and fitted with a conical lid with a top handle. The black geometric decoration on a natural background features linear and undulating motifs on the body and foot. The interior also features a concentric woven pattern. This type of basket, emblematic of Rwandan craftsmanship, was associated with the storage of precious objects or foodstuffs, and was also an object of prestige and ceremonial exchange. Antique work with slight traces of use consistent with age.
