Tutsi beaded basket in raffia and glass beads - Rwanda, first half 20th century
Small covered Tutsi basket in braided plant fibers entirely covered with white, red and blue glass beads forming a polychrome geometric design. Cylindrical shape with domed lid and central handle. This type of basket was used to store small precious objects, ornaments or prestigious substances in domestic and ceremonial contexts. The beaded decoration bears witness to the introduction and use of trade beads in Rwandan crafts at the beginning of the 20th century.
