Pierre-Jules Mêne (1810-1879) La Brebis et son Agneau French animal bronze 19th century Brown patina bronze depicting a standing ewe, head slightly turned, watching over her lamb, kneeling and suckling, a naturalistic composition characteristic of Pierre-Jules Mêne's work, with a precise modeling of the coat rendered by a vibrating surface and a careful treatment of the anatomy and ground, inscribed in the French animalist tradition of the 19th century, signed on the base "P.J. MÊNE" and bearing an engraved dedication "à son ami Bzvj, P.J. Mêne", absence of a founder's mark consistent with castings from the artist's studio before 1870, hollow cast with chisel marks visible under the base.
