Female Chokwe "Mwana Pwo" mask - Angola / DR Congo - first half 20th century Anthropomorphic Chokwe mask carved in wood depicting an idealized female face used in initiation and fertility dances. The face features narrow almond-shaped eyes, pronounced eyebrows and a straight nose extending into a central incised line on the forehead. The cheeks and chin are adorned with geometric scarification motifs and small incised signs typical of Chokwe iconography. The hairstyle is treated in relief with a grid of stylized locks reminiscent of braids. The half-open mouth reveals sculpted teeth. Light brown patina with traces of age.
