Kuba "Bwoom" mask - DR Congo - first half 20th century - Lot 92
Kuba "Bwoom" mask - DR Congo - first half 20th century
Royal Kuba mask of the Bwoom type, carved in wood and covered with characteristic polychromy in shades of ochre, black, white and yellow. The face features surfaces decorated with geometric grid patterns and painted bands, with a broad triangular nose and prominent circular mouth. Narrow eyes are topped by a horizontal white band running across the face. The voluminous headdress is adorned with painted motifs in yellow and black chevrons. The mask retains textile elements attached to the sides and top, as well as a partially preserved organic beard. In Kuba tradition, the Bwoom mask represents a character associated with mythical foundation stories, and appears in royal masquerades alongside the Mwaash aMbooy and Ngady aMwaash masks. Used patina with wear to the polychromy.
Details: Height (without beard): 37 cm - Weight: 950 g.
