Luba - Democratic Republic of Congo - Ceremonial axe in wrought iron and wood - First half of the 20th century Ceremonial axe featuring a long wooden handle topped by a carved head representing a stylized face. The face features fine lines with half-closed almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose and a discreet mouth. The coiffure is elaborate, formed of sculpted volumes arranged around the head and highlighted by linear incisions. An iron blade is inserted horizontally through the figure's mouth, forming the head of the axe. This type of object was associated with prestige and authority, often linked to the insignia of power in Luba societies. The wood surface shows a dark brown patina due to age and handling. Professional base included. Length: 42 cm - Width: 16 cm - Weight: 560 gr.
