Female Chokwe "Pwo / Mwana Pwo" mask - Angola / DR Congo - first half 20th century Anthropomorphic Chokwe mask carved in wood, depicting an idealized female face associated with fertility and initiation dances. The face features half-closed almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose and a half-open mouth revealing carved teeth. The cheeks are adorned with linear incised scarification marks typical of Chokwe iconography. The hairstyle is treated with a dense network of engraved geometric motifs evoking traditional braids. The mask retains a plant-fiber net attached by peripheral perforations, forming a headdress or hairpiece that accompanied the dance costume. Light brown patina with traces of age.
