Songye - Democratic Republic of Congo - Wrought-iron knife w - Lot 196
Songye - Democratic Republic of Congo - Wrought-iron knife with wooden handle - First half 20th century
Traditional knife of the Songye people, originally from the Kasai region of DR Congo. The long, tapered wrought-iron blade is slightly enlarged towards the center before narrowing to a pronounced point. The surface of the blade shows an old patina with traces of use and slight incised patterns visible in the center. The turned hardwood handle is composed of several carved rings and ends in a rounded pommel. A small metal chain is attached near the top of the handle. A small gap is visible at the base of the wooden handle. This type of knife was used as a utilitarian weapon, but could also serve as a prestige object or status badge within Songye society.
Length: 46 cm - Width: 10 cm - Weight: 430 gr.
