Yoruba - Nigeria - 'Ibeji' twin figure with cowrie shell man - Lot 188
Yoruba - Nigeria - 'Ibeji' twin figure with cowrie shell mantle - First half 20th century
Wooden twin figure linked to the Ibeji cult in the Yoruba tradition of Nigeria. The well-proportioned head features almond-shaped eyes in relief, a straight nose and a finely sculpted mouth. The hairstyle is treated with parallel incisions forming a stylized crest. The figure is surrounded by a dense mantle of cowrie shells fixed on a textile base around the body, constituting an original ritual adornment. Cowrie shells, associated with wealth and spiritual protection in Yoruba culture, here form a voluminous ensemble covering the torso and shoulders. The wooden head has a dark brown patina due to age and handling.
