Kanak headband - New Caledonia - 19th century
Kanak headband carved from a single piece of wood, featuring a long tapered tip forming a characteristic beak. The elongated triangular head is extended by a cylindrical handle, slightly thickened at the end. The junction between head and handle is marked by an angular relief forming a structural reinforcement. This type of weapon is associated with the Kanak cultures of New Caledonia and was used both as a combat weapon and as a status badge. The surface has a dark brown patina from use and age.
