The lid is richly decorated with finely incised geometric motifs typical of Kuba art, composed of diamond, chevron and checkerboard registers. At the center of the lid is a carved relief motif representing a stylized hand. The base is hollowed out to form a compartment for tukula powder, a pigment used in aesthetic and ritual contexts. The surface has a dark patina resulting from use and age.
