Chokwe/Lwena - Democratic Republic of the Congo - Comb with female figure - First half 20th century
Carved wooden comb featuring a stylized female head at the top. The well-balanced face features half-closed eyes, a straight nose and a slightly protruding mouth. The voluminous hairstyle is treated with parallel incisions forming a criss-cross pattern, evoking the elaborate hairstyles associated with female representations in Chokwe and Lwena art. The neck is surrounded by a copper wire ligature linking the head to the top plate of the comb, decorated with incised geometric motifs. The lower part is made up of long, narrow, regular teeth. Dark brown to black patina from use and handling. The object is presented and delivered with a professional base.
