Bakongo - Democratic Republic of the Congo - Wooden fetish d - Lot 175
Bakongo - Democratic Republic of the Congo - Wooden fetish dog - First half 20th century
Wooden sculpture representing a dog, an animal associated in Kongo culture with notions of protection, vigilance and mediation between the visible and spirit worlds. The figure is sculpted in a recumbent position on four legs, with an elongated head, circular eyes and a mouth marked by a row of incised teeth. The body is decorated with a network of engraved geometric motifs forming a grid on the back and sides, while the tail and legs also feature decorative incisions. A ritual charge cavity is visible under the tail, indicating the object's probable function in a context of protective or magico-religious practices. Light to medium brown patina due to age and handling.
