Songye - Democratic Republic of the Congo - Axe with asymmetrical blade - First half 20th century
Prestigious Songye axe with asymmetrical wrought-iron blade, featuring a wide curvature and partially serrated edge. The blade is attached to the handle by a twisted metal structure and forged elements forming a characteristic open assembly. The wooden handle is sheathed in skin or organic material, ending in a rounded pommel. This type of axe was used by the Songye as a weapon, status badge or ceremonial object. The metal surface shows a patina of use and traces of age.
