Songye axe with copper blade - DR Congo - early 20th century Songye axe with hammered copper blade featuring a characteristic curved shape with a tapered tip and slightly serrated end. The surface of the blade is decorated with engraved geometric motifs and a small stylized anthropomorphic figure. The wooden handle is entirely covered with copper foil secured by small nails, with a terminal bulge forming a pommel. This type of axe was used by the Songye as a prestige object or status symbol, sometimes in a ceremonial context. Old copper patina and visible traces of use.
