Songye - Democratic Republic of the Congo - Wooden fetish wi - Lot 229
Songye - Democratic Republic of the Congo - Wooden fetish with turned head - First half 20th century
Carved wooden fetish depicting a standing anthropomorphic figure with its head deliberately turned, giving a particular dynamic to the whole. This position of the head is not very frequent and considered relatively rare in Songye production, the face with stylized features and copper-inlaid eyes, the body treated geometrically with bent arms framing the abdomen, resting on a circular base, the surface showing a marked patina of use with wear and traces of age consistent with ritual use.
