Songye- Democratic Republic of Congo - Wrought-iron axe with - Lot 199
Songye- Democratic Republic of Congo - Wrought-iron axe with wooden handle - First half 20th century
Axe attributed to the Songye people of DR Congo, featuring an enlarged, slightly arched wrought-iron blade. Particularly thick and heavily forged, the blade has an atypical profile, with tapered ends and areas decorated with fine incisions near the base. It is attached to the handle by three parallel metal rods forming an openwork structure. The wooden handle has an elongated shape ending in a rounded pommel. The surface of the metal shows a patina of use and traces of forging. This type of axe could be associated with prestige functions or ceremonial use in the context of Songye material traditions.
Length: 35 cm - Width: 19 cm - Weight: 505 gr.
