Chokwe - Democratic Republic of Congo/ Angola - Wrought-iron - Lot 200
Chokwe - Democratic Republic of Congo/ Angola - Wrought-iron axe with wooden handle and copper nails - First half 20th century
Small axe attributed to the Chokwe people of Angola and southern DR Congo. The slightly flared wrought-iron blade features decorative motifs punched into the surface. It is attached to an angled wooden handle, the upper part of which is richly decorated with numerous copper nails forming a dense, structured pattern. A decorative metal ring also surrounds the upper part of the handle. The surface of the metal shows a patina of use and traces of forging. This type of small axe could be associated with prestige objects or insignia of authority in the context of Chokwe material traditions.
