Yaka/Zombo - Democratic Republic of Congo - Carved wooden stick - First half 20th century
Carved stick attributed to the Yaka people of DR Congo, topped by a finely stylized anthropomorphic head. The face features large almond-shaped eyes highlighted by incisions, a short nose and a slightly protruding mouth. The voluminous headdress is decorated with incised geometric motifs, while the face and temples also feature stylized scarification marks. The stick is extended by a long, slender handle. The surface of the wood shows a patina of use and traces of age. This type of stick may have been associated with a badge of authority or an object of prestige in the context of Yaka social and ritual traditions.
