Holo openwork window panel - Democratic Republic of the Congo - first half of the 20th century
Openwork architectural panel carved from a single block of wood, attributed to the Holo people of the Kwango region. The composition is centered around a standing anthropomorphic figure with widely-spread arms, linking the uprights of the rectangular frame. The figure features a stylized face with half-closed eyes and an open mouth, treated in a sober, expressive style. The frame is decorated with a continuous register of incised triangular geometric motifs, typical of architectural ornamentation in this region. This type of panel was integrated into the openings of dwellings, serving both as a decorative element and for ventilation. Beautiful patina with traces of age.
