Chokwe tobacco mortar - DR Congo / Angola - first half 20th - Lot 5
Chokwe tobacco mortar - DR Congo / Angola - first half 20th century
Small tobacco mortar carved in dense wood, resting on a cylindrical base and topped with a flared bowl for grinding tobacco. The shaft features a stylized female head with half-closed eyes, a straight nose and slightly protruding lips. The face features geometric scarification marks on the cheek and an elaborate hairstyle rendered in a rhythmic pattern of regular reliefs. The upper edge of the bowl is decorated with a register of incised geometric motifs. Mortars of this type were used to crush tobacco before consumption, and are a typical example of Chokwe utilitarian sculpture.
