Figurative Lulua tobacco box - Democratic Republic of the Co - Lot 26
Figurative Lulua tobacco box - Democratic Republic of the Congo - first half of the 20th century
Tobacco box carved from a single block of wood, depicting a seated male figure with knees raised and arms resting against the cheeks in a meditative attitude. The head features stylized features with decorative incisions marking the hairstyle, temples and mouth, characteristic of Kasai Lulua aesthetics. The cylindrical container forming the lid is integrated into the top of the head and fitted with a braided suspension cord. This type of object was used to store tobacco or other small precious substances, and bears witness to the sculpted utilitarian production of this region. Patina and traces of age.
