Pende - Democratic Republic of the Congo - Wooden anthropomo - Lot 172
Pende - Democratic Republic of the Congo - Wooden anthropomorphic bowl - First half 20th century
Pende ritual bowl carved in the shape of a human head, resting on a flared cylindrical foot. The face displays stylized features characteristic of Pende aesthetics: half-closed eyes, straight nose, discreet mouth and smooth volumes accentuating the calm expression. The hairstyle is rendered by an incised decorative band with a geometric motif around the top of the head, forming the actual cut. Dark brown to black patina, shiny in places, due to use and handling. The object shows a small loss at the foot and the lateral handle is missing; however, traces indicate that the bowl continued to be used after the breakage, testifying to its utilitarian and ritual function in Pende material culture.
Provenance: Monti private collection, Brussels.
