Ancestral bust - Sepik River (Keram) region, Papua New Guine - Lot 2
Ancestral bust - Sepik River (Keram) region, Papua New Guinea - mid-20th century
Ancestral bust carved in dense wood from the Sepik River region, more precisely from the Keram area. The elongated head features a stylized face characterized by a long, protruding nose, pronounced superciliary arches forming large volumes above the eyes, and a discreet mouth. The ears are reduced to small lateral protrusions. The sculpture retains a dark, patinated surface, testifying to its ancient use, while the flared base probably enabled the piece to be placed on the ground or integrated into a ritual or architectural ensemble. Busts of this type evoke ancestral or spiritual figures associated with the ritual traditions of the Sepik region.
