Balinese knife with carved horn handle - Bali, Indonesia - e - Lot 153
Balinese knife with carved horn handle - Bali, Indonesia - early 20th century
Knife with straight iron blade ending in a rounded tip, showing patina and traces of oxidation. The curved handle is made of dark horn and carved into the shape of a stylized head, with circular eyes, prominent nose and open mouth. Parallel incisions and small decorative plates attached by rivets evoke a stylized headdress or helmet. This type of figurative handle is characteristic of certain traditional weapons from Bali, where horn or wooden handles frequently depict human or mythological figures. The object combines a utilitarian function with a symbolic dimension.
