Augenwender" figurative clock, Germany, 19th century - Lot 162
Augenwender" figurative clock, Germany, 19th century
Figurative clock in carved and gilded wood, known as Augenwender, depicting a standing male figure in oriental dress, wearing a stylized headdress and holding a parasol in his left hand. The figure rests on a rectangular molded base and incorporates the clock movement in a carved rock forming the dial support.
The circular dial with Roman numerals is set into the sculptural composition; the mechanism is accessible through an opening at the back.
This type of clock, known as Augenwender ("the one who looks away"), is typical of 19th-century German decorative production, combining orientalist fantasy, sculpture and popular clockmaking.
Traces of use, wear to the gilding, minor missing parts and visible old restorations, notably to the base and reliefs, in keeping with the age and use of the object.
German work, 19th century.
Dimensions: 45 × 28 cm, weight 2.8 kg
