Brass Corpus of Christ "Christus Rex" - Mosan, Late 12th - E - Lot 155
Brass Corpus of Christ "Christus Rex" - Mosan, Late 12th - Early 13th century
Rare Romanesque crucified brass figure of Christ, from the Mosan region (Meuse valley, present-day Belgium/France/Netherlands), circa 1180-1220. Cast in solid brass, the sculpture measures 16 cm high with a span of 13 cm between the hands. Weight 94 g
Christ is depicted crowned, in the triumphal iconography of Christus Rex, symbolizing his divine royalty. The stylized features - bowed head, almond-shaped eyes, delicately curved mouth - are typical of late Romanesque art. Simple incisions outline the folds of the garment, and the crossed feet reflect traditional medieval representations. The reverse is flat and undecorated, with traces of original tools.
Warm, even patina, with some age- and devotion-related marks. Originally attached to a processional or altar cross, this object is a fine example of medieval Mosan goldsmithing.
Dimensions: height 16 cm from head to foot; width 13 cm.
Condition: good overall condition, period wear and patina, no visible restoration.
