Christ of Sorrows (Ecce Homo) - Devotional wood carving, Sou - Lot 131
Christ of Sorrows (Ecce Homo) - Devotional wood carving, Southern Germany, 17th century Sculpture depicting Christ in the iconography of Christ of Sorrows (Ecce Homo), Southern Germany, probably Bavaria or Swabia, second half of the 17th century (circa 1650-1700). Carved from local pine wood, it is part of the Baroque devotional tradition of the Catholic regions of the Holy Roman Empire after the Thirty Years' War. Christ is depicted after the scourging, in an attitude of recollection, his face slightly bowed, expressing an interiorized suffering in line with regional Bavarian and Swabian models. The treatment of the torso and drapery, as well as the traces of early polychromy preserved on the surface, indicate that it was intended for a private chapel or oratory. The arms are missing, but this does not alter the overall impression. Details : Carved pine wood with traces of original polychromy; South Germany (probably Bavaria or Swabia); 17th century, circa 1650-1700; height 32 cm; weight 270 g; good overall condition with age-related wear, arms missing, base showing old cracks and traces of inactive woodborers.
