Terracotta cat with glass eyes, in the style of Goldscheider - Lot 128
Terracotta cat with glass eyes, in the style of Goldscheider, circa 1900 - Austria
Terracotta sculpture of a life-size seated cat, made in Austria around 1890-1910, in the style of the Goldscheider workshop in Vienna. This naturalistic cat is modeled in kiln-fired hollow clay, with a hand-painted polychrome finish reproducing the texture of the coat and the shading of the body. Realism is accentuated by the presence of inserted glass eyes, characteristic of certain Viennese productions of the late 19th century. The base features a ventilation hole, typical of artisanal terracotta sculptures from this period. The piece bears no visible signature; the style, technique and materials are consistent with works from the Viennese school, notably the Goldscheider circle. The piece is in good overall condition, with an antique patina and traces of use consistent with its age.
