Flemish school, mid-17ᵉ century, circle of Gerard Seghers - - Lot 111
Flemish school, mid-17ᵉ century, circle of Gerard Seghers - The Denial of Saint Peter Oil on oak panel depicting the biblical episode of the Denial of Saint Peter, featuring three mid-body figures in tight framing: the bearded apostle raising his hand in a gesture of denial, a maid wearing a striped turban and a soldier in armor holding a spear. This composition is characteristic of the Antwerp Baroque period and can be compared to the work of Gerard Seghers (Antwerp, 1591-1651), with its palette of deep blues, reds and ochres, expressive gestures and drapery, with stylistic affinities also evoking the entourage of Artus Wolffort and Erasmus Quellinus II, panel showing the tool marks of XVIIᵉ century Flemish oak and a network of craquelure consistent with age, no guild hallmark visible, presented in a later Empire frame circa 1800-1820. Details: Flemish school, circle of Gerard Seghers; subject The Denial of St. Peter; period mid XVIIᵉ century; technique oil on oak panel; panel dimensions 17 × 23 cm; weight 773 g; Empire frame circa 1800-1820; provenance private collection, Belgium; condition original panel, stable pictorial surface with age-consistent craquelure, superficial soiling and slightly yellowed varnish.
