Albert Pierre DAWANT (Paris 1852 - 1923) - Lot 109
Albert Pierre DAWANT (Paris 1852 - 1923)
Napoleon I watching over the King of Rome
Oil on parquet panel, signed lower left "A. Dawant". This composition depicts Napoleon I in a First Empire interior, watching over the cradle of the King of Rome. The Emperor, in dark uniform, is depicted in a contemplative pose beside the child, while the background reveals a rich palatial décor and secondary figures. The precise treatment of fabrics, furniture and ornamental elements bears witness to the taste for historical accuracy characteristic of academic painting in the late 19th century. A pupil of Jean-Paul Laurens, Albert Pierre Dawant exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1879 and specialized in historical and Napoleonic scenes, often set in carefully reconstructed interiors. The theme of the King of Rome, charged with dynastic symbolism, was a great success in Napoleonic iconography and was the subject of several interpretations by the artist. Dimensions (panel): 67 × 82 cm; dimensions with frame: 90 × 103 cm. Old varnish; examination under UV lamp reveals no apparent restoration. On reverse: handwritten label "Paris 1853-1920".
